Wildlife

Recently we have had quite a bit of nocturnal activity. The folks in the bunkhouse were serenaded at close range the other night by a barred owl (who cooks for yoooou), and we have heard coyote yips and howls. Andrea Hansen has seen a healthy pair of coyotes between her house and the water, as well as on the road. Andrea also reports fox whelps being raised in her yard. The turkey fleet has diminished to a single bird. Red squirrels are not plentiful anymore (whoops...might be another reason for that). We have seen very few deer this summer, despite the mild winter. Perhaps the coyotes have been at work on the herd.

  1. I ran over a red squirrrrrrrrrr, Daddoo, in the car yesterday. Actually I think it may have been a chipmunk but I'm pretending it was a red squirrrrrrr because then I don't feel so badly about it. xoxoxoxo

  2. Ow, Mol.
Down here at Loganstein we only seem to have vast numbers of nasty yellow-jackets. I'd give my eye teeth for an owl or an eagle or even a chipmunk. Or, for that matter, anybody at all who would eat some of the seed in the beautiful new bird feeder...

  3. A year or so ago a deer was hit by a car near Broad and Olney, far from where a deer should be. Folks at the scene were pretty sure it was a large dog. Just goes to show how dangerous it can be to get off the subway on the wrong side of the street..Dave
